Sometimes I view online atheism as disappointing. Many online appear, in my opinion, to view their mission to simply mock religious believers and never proffer an actual argument against some believer they’re having a dialogue with at the time. The discussion devolves into insult and condescension. I don’t think that’s a way to approach anyone’s dogma, and of course it doesn’t make either party look especially mature. There are some that are decent and ask respectable questions, only to receive the same condescending, attitude from the other person. Does that mean, as atheists, we should descend to the same level in response?

Is America a “Christian Nation”?

I saw something interesting on social media. American Atheists is in the middle of their annual conference and there was a tweet that mentioned a chant by attendees claiming that “America is NOT a Christian Nation!”. Is that true? I think it’s easy to pretend we’re not, and maybe people attending that conference think that the rise of the religiously unaffiliated indicate that America isn’t a Christian nation. that poll however, has less to do with belief in general than it does as to the state of the Christian religion in America.

Get Out of Our Country, Atheists!

Atheists have always been concerned, to a degree, with how low we poll among the general population as to being trusted. We have polled lower than rapists and that should be disturbing to anyone, atheist or not. Why is it we’re so disliked (okay, I’ll say it – hated) by those that probably don’t personally know an atheist? Why is it that just not believing in god(s) somehow brings out a level of vitriol in some people that in any other circumstance, would be considered a threat? Think about it. Some of the things I’ve seen posted on social media by so-called believers are so over the top that it has me wondering about the mental health of the same.

Why are you obsessed with God, a being you claim doesn’t exist? ?Is a question atheists often hear. Personally, I’m not obsessed with any god, although I do write about the subject on occasion. The reason, I write about something I don’t believe exists is that I want to show others that there’s no reason to believe in something that has no effect on anyone’s life.  No one has to believe in any god to get through life and there’s no punishment or reward after this life for anything.

Protecting Religion Over the Public

I’ve been reading about a bill, in Missouri, which if passed by the legislature, and signed into law, would not allow any of those that make a court challenge of separation of church and state, to remain anonymous, unless that person were a minor. When I first read about this, I was skeptical that this proposed law would only affect those certain cases. Today I decided to do a little more investigation and , yes, that’s all it would affect.

As an atheist, are you happy? It’s a question I’m asked by those of my friends that are aware of my atheism. It sounds like a strange question, doesn’t it? What does atheism have to do with happiness? Why would an atheist be less happy than anyone else? These are the questions that go through my mind when I’m approached with this question. It’s as if atheists are a different species of human being.

Would Knowledge of God Change Your Mind?

Consider, just for a moment, if today, we discovered that there were definitive proof of God? I mean that that proof would be beyond dispute; Every scientist, philosopher would agree that yes, God has been discovered. What would be the fallout of that occurring? I’m not saying that this God itself would hold a press conference, just that it was discovered that there was indisputable, demonstrable proof this God existed? Would atheists suddenly become believers? And for those believers, would they need to believe anymore because their belief had been supplanted by knowledge? Faith itself would no longer be required.

Realizing When No On Cares About Your Belief

Ever notice that there are some people that just want to tell others about their religion. I’m not specifically referring to evangelizing, try to convert someone, just that they. love talking about church, their pastor, the most recent sermon, or something else related. I think that many of these just assume that whoever their speaking with holds at least a similar belief, and that discussing their belief is okay. It’s never considered that the person they are conversing with just may not care. In fact, maybe that other person  holds different beliefs or none at all.

Is Christianity Monotheist?

I’m always amazed when I have a discussion with a Christian how they justify their belief. There is actually no historical evidence for the Jesus of the New Testament, even though most scholars will tell us that there probably was a Jesus during the 1st century. It seems that his biographers enhanced his character over time to the point where the finally deified him at the council of Nicea in 325 C.E. Of course Christians say that early believers were worshipping him long before that, but there’s no textual proof of that. Not even Paul, the most prolific exigent of the New Testament, and the earliest writer known, never referred to Jesus as God.

Atheists Won’t Go Away

Atheists I know didn’t lose their belief because of anything other than the obvious: There’s no proof that any god(s) exist. I won’t say t became angry, or were even abused in their church, but mostly, in my experience, becoming an atheist was a rational conclusion that was decided over a period of time. We are a marginalized group, and we’re not very organized because atheism is something that’s personal. Sure there are various community groups where atheists may meet together but those groups are, at least from what I’ve seen, social meetings. I certain ways, no much different that a church in that a church is a place for believers to meet and feel welcome.
